Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

One of my friends had been telling me to watch this movie for a while. He was like, “It’s super sad, you’ll love it!” I felt a little attacked, but he wasn’t wrong. This is one of the saddest and best movies I’ve ever seen. For a film to be deemed “Hundo P” it has to leave me feeling a hundred percent satisfied. I don’t mean satisfied as in everything is happy and makes complete sense, which certainly isn’t the case for this film, satisfied as in afterwards all I can do is just bask in its greatness. There’s nothing that I’m left questioning, or thinking could have been done better. All I’m thinking is, “That was so fucking good”.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) is a science fiction / romantic drama film written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry. I’m not usually into sci-fi movies because they usually aren’t real-lifey enough for me, but this movie is so real. The sci-fi component is a brilliantly creative and motivated way to tell the film’ s story and enhance what it’s really about. One of my biggest film pet peeves is when love stories don’t feel authentic; like prancing in a prairie is not how you fall in love in real life. It’s usually a much more complicated experience, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind captures that nuance beautifully. It’s one of the most authentic love stories I’ve ever seen in film, which is largely due to how developed the two main characters are, and Jim Carrey’s and Kate Winslet’s performances playing them. Their acting is insane, like they are the characters, and when you’re watching, you are too. That’s why this film is so good; the story world becomes your world, and you can’t leave it, even after you finish watching. If you’ve recently been through a breakup, or not even if it was recent, if you’ve ever been through a breakup, this movie will probably fuck you up. So maybe do a lil mental stability check-in with yourself before watching. But, if you’re in the schmood to cry and think about your ex for a couple of days definitely give it a watch!
